In 2020-21, Kivu provided strategic advice to a team working on the development of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s (DFAT’s) governance and accountability programming in Papua New Guinea. This focused on the development of options for politically informed policy influencing approaches. It included advice on options for developing ‘issue-based projects’ or ‘coalitions for change’ approaches which maximise the potential for policy impact. Reflecting DFAT concerns, the work also developed options for mitigating risk for this form of programming.

Key Impacts:
  • Successfully ensured that more innovative, potentially higher-impact approaches to governance and accountability programming were proposed to DFAT
  • Increased Kivu understanding of the political economy and country context in Papua New Guinea
