The TRACTION programme seeks to make progress on policy issues in Malawi by building coalitions of local actors powerful enough to affect change. Traction brings together interests and organisations who care about an issue and then supports them to carry out relevant policy analysis and advocacy on that issue – it is an example of ‘issue-based programming’.

Kivu’s role includes: mentoring on issue selection and the development of policy influencing strategies; supporting the team on implementation of policy influencing strategies, including ongoing advice and support for the core TRACTION team as well as local coalition partners; (strategic support and ad hoc advice, including political economy analysis; building policy development skills within the local team; and providing direct input on various products and activities.

Key Impacts:
  • Increased capacity in the core team for political analysis and policy influencing work
  • Kivu’s support helped to secure TRACTION engagement with the Malawi Revenue Authority and led to a programme of work to support reform to improve the import process
